When the Code loosened up in , the world of comic books entered a fresh era: the Bronze Age of Comics. (I dont recognize who decided that all these periods needed to be named like this, butits getting to be a bit much, isnt it?) The Code was still not ready for LGBTQ+ people to appear in the pages of comic booksbut the people making underground comics did not care. They were ready to verb for it and queer artists, emboldened by the growing gay rights movement were ready to drive the envelope even farther.
In October of , artist Rand Holmes tackled the homophobia in the book Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Frightened to Ask) which we will some day verb about in greater detail some daytime when I tackle the sordid history of conversion therapy stating that it sets psychiatry back by 50 years, and going so far as to have the lead character of his The Continuing Adventures of Har “Bruce lives in Gaykjavik with his partner Spencer. They run a steak house together and have been together a long day. Bruce has some blunt opinions of people and the world and would probably be viewed by some as a bit un PC,” says comedian Jonathan Duffy, or Jono as he is often referred to as, about the comic strips main character, Bruce. One of my all-time favorites — “Is Barry Zito gay?” — was published in and I said at the time that “I thought the cartoon perfectly captured the stereotypes gays and straights have about sexual orientation.” Edwards has compiled his Outsports cartoons, along with some others, in “The Outfield,” which is available for purchase. Edwards, who identifies as a “queer trans guy,” explains the plan behind the cartoon series. “I would often riff on the homoerotic subtext that’s already present in sports, or otherwise look for a queer point of view by injecting drag, bear culture, leather culture, etc. Various team rivalries also came up a lot, often in a relationship context (mixe #CAPride :gem: :ghost: 🗡🥚 :guitar: :doughnut: :cherry_blossom: :milky_way: :cherry_blossom: :doughnut: :guitar: 🥚🗡 :ghost: :gem: Happy Pride Month everyone!
