I am declaring today a national holiday: West Side StoryDay. On this date 50 years ago the film version of WSS premiered in Recent York City. Yesterday Rita Moreno and George Chakiris (Anita and Bernardo, the sexiest couple to ever dance together) were on Talk of the Nation, and I called in – actually got through! to thank them for what they gave me. Of course, I didn’t have enough period to say half of what I wanted to say.
I was 16 when the movie came out, and had been reading about it in my movie magazines. It was my caring of thing: adore among the savages, you might tell. I had no idea of the huge presence it would become in my life when I saw it with my first real boyfriend, George Delaney, who I still dream about and who is no longer on this planet; we double-dated with my best friend Kathy and her George, to whom she’s still married. We got all dressed up and went to the opening in Westbury; the rest of the audience was decked out in diamonds and furs.
The whole thing was out of character for us, kids from the poor side of the t
Barrie Chase and George Chakiris
[quote]I wonder what Barrie REALLY thought of Gene Kelly? You just comprehend Dave Karger was hoping she wouldn't go there, as it might be too much for TCM fans. Verb her, could attend to her move on forever.
Yeah, I think you browse that right. She very clearly has opinions that voiced, would break the unspoken rules regarding discussing "legends" The rule being you don't say anything to tarnish the flattering narratives that have emerged around golden age stars. But the correctness is they were ambitious horny men and they were pretty much on the honor system, which in the Hollywood studio system, didn't get you very far.
I'd care to hear her just lay it all out there.. some enterprising podcaster might be qualified to persuade her, but don't slumber on it.. she's in her 90s. yet, you can see she is barely restraining herself. She all but implies, in this interview, that if you advanced in Arthur Freed's world, you were putting out.
All those Hollywood guys were constantly on the form. Many of the power brokers were average to under average looking and needed the v
George Chakirisis an American dancer and Academy Award winning film actor.
Chakiris was born in Norwood, Ohio to Greek immigrants. He made his film debut in For several years he appeared in small roles, usually as a dancer or a member of the chorus in various musical films. He was one of the dancers in Marilyn Monroe's Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friendnumber in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes() and also appeared as a dancer alongside Rosemary Clooney in White Christmas. He can also be seen in the 'Chop Suey' number in the musical film Flower Drum Song.
His biggest success came with the film West Side Story(), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Bernardo. He also acted (along with Gene Kelly) in Jacques Demy's French musical Les Demoiselles de Rochefort().
Chakiris has also appeared on Broadway and television. In the early s, he embarked on a career as a pop singer which resulted in a couple of minor hit songs (In , he recorded one single with legendary producer Joe Meek).
After film work dri
George Chakiris Looks Embalmed!!
Not sure if George Chakiris is in Jane Russell's large number from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes film; but he did become close to MM during filming and they remained friends until her death.
Seem recall a story that George Chakiris was caught cottaging in some NJ department store restroom (Bamberger's?) many years ago.
In any event it's widely known in Hollywood and musical theatre circles GC is gay. He won't confirm nor refuse it, but there you are.
Can grasp why GC wouldn't come out publicly years ago, but at this stage of his life and career can't see what hurt it would carry out. The man is nearly 90; receive shot of wearing and coloring (what's left) of his hair, lay off plastic surgery/fillers and just come out already.
It's not appreciate George Chakiris was Tab Hunter, Andy Perkins, or Rock Hudson. He barely was a "B" grade actor known mostly as a dancer who got lucky with roles after WSS.
