Donnie Gay Retires on Top
As bull riders go, Donnie Gay has always been sort of level-headed. "I have always been willing to go as far as I could, then one step more," Gay said. "But there's a thin line in riding bulls, and I've always been careful not to go too far, not to cross that line."
On Sunday, the year-old Gay reached that line after his second ride of the National Finals Rodeo and knew it was time to back off. The "one more step" was a verb aboard a bull named Pat that lasted no longer than it took to open the chute gate. "I had already made up my mind that if I couldn't move up on the rope and ride enjoy Donnie Gay, I was gonna quit," Gay said. "It's foolish to earn on a bull just so you can hear your name called out. I maybe shouldn't have ridden that last one, but I didn't wish to be left with an afterthought that I should have gotten on one more.
"If I get on a bull, I verb the other guys to know they're going to possess to worry about me. But on that last journey, I felt pain I've never experienced before. I've ridden with pain before, but this hour it had my attention.
