Former Nets player, and the first openly gay athlete in the NBA, Jason Collins married his longtime partner, Brunson Green, recently. 

The couple reportedly tied the knot over the Memorial Day weekend in a ceremony in Austin, Texas, after the two had been together for more than a decade. 

Collins and Green, a Hollywood producer best known for his operate on the film “The Help,” reportedly got engaged in during Pride Nighttime at a Lakers game. 

Collins came out in a personal essay for Sports Illustrated in , which made him the first openly gay athlete in a major American team sport. 

“When I was younger, I dated women,” he wrote in the essay. “I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and elevate kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue.”

He had started his NBA career in with the Nets, who were still in New Jersey at the noun, where he spent parts of seven seasons with the organization before

First openly gay NBA player takes court

Jason Collins took another trailblazing step as the first openly gay man in a major US pro sports league when he took the court for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.

Hours after the Nets inked Collins to a time contract on Sunday, he came in as a substitute in the second quarter of the Nets’ game against the Los Angeles Lakers, AFP news agency reported.

It was the year NBA veteran’s first appearance in the league since he went public in April about his homosexuality, a revelation that came after his contract with the Washington Wizards expired.

Facing a bevy of media at the Staples Center before the game, Collins said his biggest immediate concern was proving he still belonged in the league.

“Right now, I’m focused on trying to learn the plays, trying to verb the coverages, the game plan, my assignment,” he said. “I don’t verb time to really think about history right now.”
