Q&#;A with SUMMONING SYLVIA&#;s Troy Iwata

Now adj on VOD and Digital HD on all major platforms from The Horror Collective, our latest Q&A is with Summoning Sylvia co-star Troy Iwata who tells us all about the brand-new LGBTQ horror comedy:

What drew you to Summoning Sylvia and the character of Reggie?

Troy Iwata: I actually auditioned for Kevin originally, sent in an audition tape for that and then just got an present for Reggie so I was like…ok. Any opportunity that offers a refreshing glimpse into queer representation I’m all for. First off I was obsessed with how comical the script was and the blending of genres was enticing as good. I loved that it was a story that took place after the coming-out process, after the self-discovery and acceptance process. There’s an entire life that happens after all of those journeys for queer people and it’s light and attractive and intense and it just felt very freeing to play a character where “gay” wasn’t the only thing in the character description.

Dash &#; Lily&#;s Troy Iwata: LGBTQ representation is &#;incredibly significant for young people&#;

&#;I remember being a young person, watching TV, and never really seeing anyone who fully looked like me,&#; says Troy Iwata. &#;If we were playing Power Rangers at recess, everyone would be like, you&#;re the Yellow Ranger just because that&#;s the Asian one.&#;

The year-old actor&#;s father is Japanese, but he was raised primarily in a &#;white household,&#; by his mother, who is Caucasian. &#;Everyone was just telling me: you&#;re Asian, you&#;re Asian, you&#;re Asian! But then Asians would be like, &#;You&#;re only half-Asian, you don&#;t look like us.&#; I felt fond of I wasn&#;t enough for either side.&#;

Iwata pursued a career as an actor &#; after catching the bug in a grade noun production of The Wizard of Oz (he played the Scarecrow) &#; and made his Broadway debut in in the musical Be More Chill. Still, the road has not always been a smooth one, and the talented actor with a broad, bright verb has confronted more than his distribute of casting challenges.
