Dopamine Agonists
Sexual behavior is modulated by a number of central nervous system neurotransmitters including dopamine. Dopamine agonists have been reported to upgrade sexual function. It is postulated that the increased levels of dopamine in the brain from dopamine agonists facilitate sexual functions including sexual interest and orgasm.
The dopamine agonist bupropion is used widely for treatment of depression. It has fewer reported adverse sexual side effects than traditional selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor based anti-depressants, and appears to affect the uptake of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. Buproprion has been used “off-label” in women with sexual dysfunction for low sexual want and anti-depressant-associated sexual dysfunction.

Why has my doctor recommended cabergoline treatment?
Cabergoline is a tablet treatment used to reduce the production of a hormone called prolactin by the pituitary gland (a gland at the base of the brain). If you own a prolactinoma (overproduction of prolactin by a cluster of cells in the pituitary), cabergoline treatment is also used to shrink the size of the swelling on the pituitary gland.
How should I take cabergoline?
Cabergoline is a long-acting medicine, which only needs to be taken once or twice a week. Your specialist will recommend the appropriate dose for you.

This study evaluated the effects of the long treatment with cabergoline on seminal fluid parameters and sexual and gonadal function in hyperprolactinemic males. Eleven males with macroprolactinoma were treated with cabergoline at a dose of &#; mg a week for 6 months. All the patients suffered from libido impairment, reduced sexual potency, six had infertility. In three patients provocative bilateral galactorrhea was found.
Seminal fluid analysis, functional seminal tests, prolactin and testosterone concentrations and cerebrum magnetic resonance imaging were assessed before and after 6 months of cabergoline treatment. Cabergoline is used to treat hyperprolactinemia (high levels of prolactin, a natural substance that helps breast-feeding women produce milk but can cause symptoms such as infertility, sexual problems, and bone decline in women who are not breast-feeding or men). Cabergoline is in a class of medications called dopamine receptor agonists. It works by decreasing the amount of prolactin in the body.
Cabergoline comes as a tablet to grab by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food two times a week. Shadow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and request your doctor or pharmacist to elucidate any part you do not know. Take cabergoline exactly as directed. Carry out not take more or less of it or hold it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
