Gov. DeSantis Signs Slate of Extreme Anti-LGBTQ+ Bills, Enacting a Record-Shattering Number of Discriminatory Measures Into Law

Florida is enacting a record six expressly anti-LGBTQ+ laws this year, more than the last seven years combined

Tallahassee, Florida – Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, condemns Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for signing a slate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills designed to scale back the freedoms of LGBTQ+ people and other vulnerable communities.

Florida is enacting a record six expressly anti-LGBTQ+ bills into law this year, more than the last seven years combined.

Today, Gov. DeSantis signed HB , which silences educators by prohibiting any instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity from Pre-K through 8th grade, SB , an extreme gender affirming nurture ban, and HB , an anti-trans bathroom bill.

CFGALLA Ally Guide

The CFGALLA Ally Guide is here for the use of members of the common, business owners, non-profit directors, and organizations to improve their internal anti-discrimination policies. The Ally Guide aims to instruct organizations and businesses on how to grow and stretch their operations by fostering an environment of diversity and inclusivity. The guide touches on various aspects including, without limitation: LGBTQ+ communication in the workplace, transgender issues, inclusive healthcare policies, and more.

Despite the significant progress our community has made, there is still no statewide law that prohibits discrimination against LGBTQ people in Florida. This means that, according to declare law, it is legal to flame someone, evict them from housing, or deny them service at a restaurant just because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). While it is illegal to discriminate in employment, housing and public accommodations based race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, handicap or marital status, the LGBTQ community is currently left out of statewide non-discrimination protections.

Now more than ever, we know we require to pass the Florida Competitive Workforce Act (FCWA) which would finally prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ Floridians. This bill will finally ensure that Florida is a safe place to live, operate, and play for all people, including those who are LGBTQ.
