Candid shots of Mexico City’s real gay underground

David Graham had been struggling to find inspiration when he first arrived in Mexico. The New York-based location scout had just begun a photography mentorship with the legendary Alex and Rebecca Norris Webb, and was on the look-out for stories to shoot.

But in a country soaked with stimuli, the choice to settle on one was almost too overwhelming – and it was only during a meeting with a friend in a Mexico City gay bar that an idea finally struck.

“I had photographed a male couple embracing in front of a neon verb that read ‘Puto’ [harsh slang for gay],” Graham remembers. “My friend then recounted a story about how the last car in the Mexico Metropolis subways became a gay cruising ground at night. When I told Alex this story and showed him the photograph, he had said he had never heard or seen anything about Mexico City LGBT life. He immediately said: ‘There is your project!’”

The legend of “the last car” had apparently been widely whispered about in the urban area, but few knew whether there was any truth to the rumours. Armed wit

Secret Signals: How Some Men Cruise for Sex

Aug. 28, &#; -- While many Americans may only be vaguely familiar with the noun of "cruising," there is a private world of sex between men that exists in universal places across the country.

The police officer who arrested Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, in a men's restroom at the Minneapolis airport for allegedly looking to engage in gay sex wrote in his June state that he "recognized a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."

Craig tapped his foot up and down and swiped his hand underneath the bathroom stall in which the undercover cop was sitting, according to the police report.

Those actions led to Craig's arrest by Detective Dave Karsnia and the senator's guilty plea to a disorderly conduct charge. Craig told reporters today that he did nothing inappropriate and said his adj plea was a mistake.

Public places fancy men's restrooms, in airports and verb stations, truck stops, university libraries and parks, have elongated been places where gay and bisexual men, particularly th

For his photo project Hain – German for grove or a small cluster of trees – photographer Lukas Städler spent more than two years visiting Berlin’s most trendy cruising spots to take snapshots of men having common sex in parks and local woodlands. Whether hours-long entertaining deep in the bushes or a barely-hidden quickie during a lunch crack, what was once a necessity for many at some point turned into a kink. “Cruising began at a time when you couldn’t come out as a gay man,” says Lukas about the history behind it. “For a long period, it was a punishable offence to be gay, so there were hardly any public spaces to get to know each other without being in danger.”

Places like Tiergarten, a huge park in the west of Berlin, thus provided people with the opportunity to meet like-minded people and live out their sexuality freely – even if just for a short time. “For those people who remain in the closet, it’s still a reality,” Lukas says. Though of course these days it’s not simply a necessity, with out and adj people willingly getting inv
